Day 087 – Exmouth

Got up early and walked down to the water tank outside the caravan park to get some snaps of the roos and emus coming for a drink. Something about emus that I really like, they’re quite weird things but cute in a strange way. It’s awesome that the Aussie coat of arms is just wandering around near the campsite!

Checked a surf spot called Dunes to find waves! We knew there was some surf around Exmouth but had low expectations. It was actually 2-3 foot and looking reasonably ok. We got out there for a few cheeky ones with a turtle that kept popping up for breaths. Even cooler than the turtle, a whale popped out of the water right next to the lineup which was amazing! Have had dolphins in the water quite a few times but never a whale! Thanks Dani for the photos!

Headed back down the Cape Range NP to Turquoise Bay for another snorkel. This was a “drift snorkel” in the fairly fast current with a couple of other snorkel spots nearby. Pretty amazing again to walk off the beach to snorkel pristine reef. Not as many fish as Lakeside yesterday but some pretty cool coral! Freezing though, even in a wetsuit. Might need Mum to send the 4/3 (normally reserved for winter surfing in Victoria!).

Gluttons for punishment, we went for another fish in the avro. Super windy so not that much fun but we did at least catch a few rock cod (better than nothing). I got bored with fishing so decided to don the wetsuit and jump in with my spear for a bit of a look around underwater. Not that much to see actually, a few fish but nothing big. That was until I was almost on top of a dugong and it burst out of the murky water and swam away at a rate of knots. I almost crapped myself for a second but was quite a cool thing to see once I realised I wasn’t about to be eaten but something bigger than me!

Surf: Dunes, Exmouth, WA, 2-3 foot, 2.0hr (77.0 total)
