Day 086 – Giralia Station to Exmouth

So nice to have an indoor coffee at a table first thing in the morning! Did a bit of lazy reading then headed for Exmouth. Very, very barren but really cool to see the sapphire-blue water of Exmouth Gulf. We’d recived a tip to take a side road detour to check out the view from the top of one of the hills near the airport and it was well worth it! Despite all the cool outback stuff it was great to know we’re back on the (mostly surfable) coast for good now.

Not much to see in Exmouth, it was a bit smaller than we expected. We got the lowdown from the tourist office and headed out of town for the coast (about 15km away). I’d predicted (based on not much at all) that we’d see emus before we saw red kangaroos and I was right! Saw a whole bunch (flock?) of them right next to the road. Drove up to the lookout to check out the area and saw multiple whales blowing spouts all over the place! Also saw 3 huge shapes in the water from 2km away which were either dugongs or rays.

Headed down the coast to a caravan park in the middle of nowhere and quickly set up before busting out the snorkeling gear. We went straight to a recommended spot called Lakeside in the Cape Range National Park. Most amazing snorkeling I’ve ever done! Saw 50 or 60 species of fish within about 5 minutes and the reef is only 10m from the beach! Very chilly water compared to Broome though, didn’t stay in too long but we saw plenty in less than an hour in the water. Drove back to the campsite very carefully with roos all over the road well before dark.
