Day 064 - Jim Jim Billabong to Maguk/Barramundi Gorge (Kakadu)

Yellow Waters wetlands cruise first thing. Very pricey at $72 each (!) but worth it as we got to see 6 or 7 crocs chowing into a dead buffalo floating in the river. Was really cool watching them tear chunks off and have the odd blue with each other as they asserted their various positions in the hierarchy. We did also see loads of birds and great scenery. The best part of the day was yet to come however as the next stop was Maguk, otherwise known as Barramundi Gorge.

This is one spot I particularly remembered from the family trip around Oz almost 20 years ago. A dirt road off the highway then a 15 minute hike gets you to an amazing water-filled gorge with 30m high walls and a waterfall at the end. We swam in the clear water (a welcome relief from the heat) and jumped off the same cliff jump I'd loved so much as an 11 year old. Years ago we'd also climbed up the side of the waterfall (to mum's horror) so in keeping tradition I climbed up again rather than take the path. Sorry Mum (actually this ways probably more dangerous because you have to climb up the opposite side now).

At the top, more rock pools and little canyon sort of things. Oh and loads of German tourists. Not sure there are any Germans left in Germany with the number of tourists in Indonesia and Australia but fair play to them for getting out and travelling the other side of the world in such numbers. The funny part is that the Germans you talk to all seem to dislike seeing other Germans in their travels!
