Day 120 - Cactus to Drummond Point

Woke up super early and sprinted up the sand dune to find the surf all but gone!!! The breaks in front of the campsite were almost flat (but perfect, see the first pic) and Caves (the main break) had a couple of guys out and looked tiny. Dammit! We decided to wait for the tide to see if things improved but in the meantime the wind came up and was blowing 30 knots offshore within an hour. To make matters worse, our campsite neighbour said the early session was actually quite good, much better out there than what it looked like from our vantage point. Crap!

We'd blown it. By the time we realised it had been surfable the wind was right up and it had all gone off the boil and not really worth getting out there. Heaps more locals out later in the morning too so (although they seemed ok) it wouldn't have been the most relaxing session scrapping for waves. The pics make it look quite a bit better than it was. Oh well, somewhere to come back to one day. Ridiculously good set-up, I can see why some people call it the best in Australia.

Anyway, we hit the road headed towards Port Lincoln. Great drive along some very scenic coast and checked a few surf spots but didn't find much in the current conditions. Amazing coastline though. We ended up getting in the water at Streaky Bay back beach. Not much swell but we got a couple of little waves. Nice spot, would probably crank on the right day.

It didn't quite look like we were going to make it quite to Port Lincoln so we checked our camping and surfing books for a good spot. Decided that Drummond Point was a good free camp with a chance of surf in the morning so aimed for that. It seemed like it was easy enough to find the spot from the highway but it was dark by the time we turned off and so badly signposted that we ended up driving for literally hours past wheat fields and up and down backroads! Apparently the locals take downs the signs so tourists can't find the surf spots. It works!

By about 11pm we decided we'd had enough and made camp just off one of the dirt road in a clearing fairly close to the water (well close to the edge of the cliff that obviously had water at the bottom). Not ideal and not the surf spot as far as we could tell but we were too tired by this stage to care...
