Day 107 - Yallingup

Out for the early but it was probably the worst Yallingup we've surfed. Windy (like 30 knots windy) and only about 3 foot. Looks like our run of good waves has petered out a bit. After breakfast we gathered up our group (myself, Jack, Mary, Matt, Sarah and their friends, Clay and Claire) and went crusing for waves.

We checked out Surfer's Point at Margaret River and it was more than twice overhead with a light offshore. We just watched and it looked fun although very solid and hard to get into the waves. Most of the guys going out for a surf had 7 foot plus big wave boards. I'd have been under-gunned on my 6'6". One guy came in with an 11'6" gun! Clearly that was for Hawaii or outer reefs here but he was just giving it a run. Never seen a surfboard like it in my life.

Tried to check out Gas Bay for a more protected surf but the road was blocked off by the cops because of a massive bushfire, a controlled burn that became uncontrolled in the wind. I did managed to tick off encountering an English WA copper though. Every copper I've seen (on tv) in WA seems to be English. Why?

We eneded up at Redgate, a bit further south, and all got out for a few onshore (wind kept chaning all day) waves of dubious quality. We didn't last all that long but it's a nice spot, just not when you're being drilled into a sandbank! Cruised into Margaret River township for a beer and a burger at the local pub which was quite nice (although the town isn't much to write home about).

We got back to Yallingup to find it clean, headhigh and fairly pumping. Crowded but looking the most consistent we'd seen it! Jack and I got out there on the reef but sadly it was way too crowded and the waves seemed to fizzle out. I got a few but with a lot of waiting and dodging people. Can't complain when you're able to get in the water three times in one day! The best part was the sky and sunset, a bit of cloud and bushfire smoke makes for an amazing view as the sun goes down over here!
