Day 073 - Silent Grove to Winjana Gorge (Gibb River Road)

Man it's hot. We skipped the extra drive and hike up to Bell Gorge (we're getting a bit gorged-out) and kicked back in the shade for a bit. Pumped up the slowly deflating tyres. Yes, tyres. the multi-repaired right tyre is losing about 20 psi overnight and the left is losing about 10 psi so every morning now we have the compressor out to pump them up for the days drive!

I also got to observe a few new bird species which is very exciting for me at the moment. I realised in Kakadu that there are so many birds I don't know in Australia and since then have decided to get more into birdwatching. I'm learning at least a couple of new birds a day and geeking out on it a bit but hey, it's lonely in the bush.

Headed back out to the GRR, picking up our (empty) yabbie pots from one of the creeks. The road is great in parts but really terrible too! Lots of it is so bad that you can't even listen to music, all you can do is hold on to the door to stop it shaking off it's hinges. We saw a Nissan Patrol pulled over so stopped to see if they were ok. Just a flat tyre so no big deal. Funny thing was that we then got a flat about 5km down the road. The multi-repaired tyre got another hole! Managed to patch up the hole with 4 tyre repair bits of goo (surely that's not recommended) and waved to the Nissan when they slowed down to check on us! By the way we do have 2 spares but decided to keep the dodgy one going to then replace it in Broome.

Turned off the GRR for Windjana Gorge and it was suddenly the worst road we'd had by a factor about about 10. Brutal, relentless, slamming corrugations which had us wondering if we should bother going to stay at this last gorge. Luckily we did, it was amazing. A 600 million year old coral reef now exposed above the plains, full of fossils and stunning in the sunset. Caught up with the Nissan Patrol and it turned out to be a French couple who'd done all this hardcore 4wd stuff up Cape York and the Savannah Way only to get their first flat on the GRR from a random piece of glass!
