Sussed out the reef breaks straight out from Tuban (that's Kuta Reef, Middles and Airport Lefts). It's quite a way out to the reef (you need a boat to take you) but all looked more than double overhead and we didn't fancy going face first into the reef one day one. Instead we had a bit of brekky then grabbed out boards to find a peak on the beachies. Found some waves (and crowds) up at middle Kuta beach and had about an hour of pounding overhead (4 foot) surf, some of the most powerful beach breaks I've surfed! Good to be back in the water after not surfing since Noosa though.
Headed back to Homebase and organised a van to take us for a look see down the Bukit peninsula where all the famous Bali waves are. Didn't bother taking our boards as we knew it was 8 foot plus. Went straight to Padang Padang first and were lucky enough to stumble onto a Rip Curl surf competition which was on for one day only (they pick the best day in August). Amazing scene with ridiculously hot girls all over the beach and huge 10-12 foot Padang being surfed by some of the world's best. We saw 3 10-point rides in a couple of hours and when they didn't make the barrel they got absolutely smashed! Check the Rip Curl website for all the pics and videos.
Cruised around the Bukit after the comp to check out the waves at Uluwatu (huge and scary looking at 10 foot plus with only 6 guys out) and also the temple with the famous evil monkeys. Checked out Dreamland (another wave) on the way back and you could look back up the Bukit to see all the surf spots pumping with the massive swell. We found out later that a guy we met almost died that day getting dragged across dry reef at 8 foot Balangan.
Slightly random dinner with a few girls from Broome that we met as the van was dropping us off (and picking them up). We ended sharing a meal but it turned out one of the girl's ex boyfriend was stalking her and hanging around outside the restaurant and sending weird texts. We ended up diffusing the situation, sending the guy on his way and putting the girls into a taxi. Random!
