Day 039 - Tuban to Balian (Bali)

Finally out first surf on a Bali reef! We got some local info from Slim and went out at Airport Lefts (just a short boat ride straight out from Tuban). Called Airport Lefts because it's right next to the runway (on the west side, Airport Rights on the other side). Had a great surf, 3 hours of 3-4 foot waves which were great when you snagged one from the crowded pack. Proper solid walls, great fun and still plenty of punch in the waves. Plenty of water over the reef so not too sketchy, probably could have come out yesterday. Felt like real surfing again, even though the beachies were relatively heavy the first couple of days.

At midday we met Romy, our deviant van driver (I can't print his stories online without changing this blog to adult content), to drive us up to Balian which is a village 2.5 hours west of Kuta. Really interesting drive and good to get out of the urban area of Kuta and into the countryside, seeing our first rice fields, etc. Found a spot to stay in Balian right in front of the waves but the tradewinds blow sideshore in the afternoon so it was a mess although plenty of swell. Chilled out a bit, walked up to the village market for dinner, etc. Met a couple of guys from Narra, Steve and Mick, who told all sorts of exciting and horrifying stories about surf boat trips elsewhere in Indo.
