Big drive today but absolutely stunning (with the obligatory stop at the Walkabout Creek Hotel in McKinley). We were really impressed with how beautiful the landscape is out here, especially as you near Mt Isa. Rather than the flat, arid outback I expected the road weaves through lots of hills that look something like out of a Roadrunner cartoon.
Mt Isa is actually quite something too. The mine dominates the town but the setting, surrounded by all the hills, has a sort of industrial/oasis appeal to it. Not sure I'd want to live here but a cool place to visit. Quite gutted when we found out we're missing the rodeo here this weekend, apparently one of the best rodeos in Australia. Oh well, we drowned our sorrows in a couple of XXXX's (and actually bought a slab on the way home to see us through the trip to Darwin).
