Day 067 - Timber Creek to Purnululu NP (Bungle Bungles)

Up early to beat the heat and checked the yabbie pots but no luck this time. Jack was disappointed but put on a brave face as we headed west. Crossed over the border into WA (first time for me!) and handed over all our fruit and veg to the quarantine officer. Dropped into Kununurra for fuel, supplies and to get online to check emails, etc. The town wasn't as seedy as I'd expected from all the stories I'd heard but there's definitely a tense vibe here.

With Nessie full of diesel we headed west briefly then turned south for the Bungle Bungles, a huge 600km (round trip) diversion but hopefully worth it to see this world heritage listed attraction. Made the first 250km to the turn off at about 100 km/hr but once on the dirt track, our speed dropped to about 20! The dirt road was worse than expected but only 53km to the ranger station! We slowly trundled our way through what turned out to be amazing countryside, really different to anything I'd seen in Australia, or anywhere for that matter. Barren moonscapes, rocky creek crossings, red escarpment and the sunset behind us lighting it all up in reds and pinks and yellows. Not ideal to be doing the last offroad sector in the dark but no problem (and quite cool) with our massive spotlights and we even saw a couple of nonchalant dingoes wandering across the road.
